Mercedes GLB: New 48V Hybrid, Specs & Features

Mercedes-Benz is upgrading its GLB model with a new 48-volt hybrid system, marking a significant step forward in powertrain technology.

The German automaker is introducing the new system, designed to improve efficiency and driveability through the coordinated operation of an internal combustion engine and electric assistance. The move reflects a broader industry trend toward partial electrification as manufacturers seek to meet increasingly stringent emissions standards.

Electric Assistance for Everyday Driving

The updated GLB models feature a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine paired with a 22 kW electric motor. This electric unit is directly integrated into a newly developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, resulting in a compact and space-saving system. Power is supplied by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1.3 kWh.

In urban environments and during low-load conditions, the system can operate in fully electric mode. This reduces fuel consumption and emissions, particularly for short trips. The powertrain also offers a “gliding” mode, where the internal combustion engine disengages, allowing the vehicle to coast at speeds up to approximately 62 mph.

Regenerative braking plays a key role in maximizing efficiency. The electric motor can recover energy in all eight gears, with a maximum output of 25 kW. This process continuously recharges the battery, ensuring frequent availability of electric assistance.

Multiple Power Levels, Different Drive Configurations

The hybrid versions of the GLB are available in three power levels: 136, 163, and 190 horsepower. While the electric motor remains consistent across all variants, the internal combustion engine is tuned differently to achieve varying outputs. The combined system output ranges from 156 to 211 horsepower.

Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations are offered. All-wheel drive provides enhanced traction in challenging conditions or for mixed-use scenarios. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph ranges from 7.5 to 9.7 seconds, with top speeds between 121 and 134 mph.

Fuel economy figures range from 5.7 to 6.7 liters per 100 kilometers, a moderate value considering the vehicle’s size and weight. The GLB offers 540 liters of cargo space, providing ample capacity for both family and work-related needs.

Digitalization and Driver Assistance

Beyond the powertrain enhancements, the GLB also features significant advancements in digital systems. The new Mercedes-Benz operating system (MB.OS) enables over-the-air software updates, keeping vehicle functions current throughout its lifespan.

The vehicle’s MBUX system utilizes artificial intelligence, supported by technologies from Microsoft and Google, for a more intuitive and personalized user experience.

Standard safety features include distance assist, while an optional package adds a steering assistant to the driver assistance system, bringing the vehicle closer to Level 2 automated driving capabilities, including lane-change assistance.
