Musical ‘Dawn of the Eyes’ Ends Run Early Amidst Payment Disputes
The South Korean musical “Dawn of the Eyes” has abruptly ended its run a month ahead of schedule, with actors and crew citing unpaid wages totaling over 200 million won (approximately $150,000 USD). Reports indicate concerns over the condition of the theater space, including fire hazards and water leaks, have as well contributed to the early closure.
According to reports from the Chosun Ilbo, actors have directly spoken out about the financial difficulties and are preparing a collective statement and considering a press conference to address the issue of unpaid salaries.
The production company initially cited “management reasons” for the early termination, as reported by Yonhap News. However, the growing concerns over unpaid wages have brought the situation into sharper focus.
News of the abrupt closure follows a recent apology from the lead actors, which, according to KBS News, did little to quell the rising discontent.
The musical, based on the popular novel of the same name, has been a significant cultural touchstone in South Korea. The early end to its run is likely to spark further discussion about working conditions and financial stability within the country’s performing arts industry.
