Carolina Marín: Badminton Legend Announces Retirement After Injury Struggles

Carolina Marín, widely considered Spain’s greatest badminton player of all time, has announced her immediate retirement from the sport. The decision comes as the 32-year-classic grapples with persistent knee injuries that have hampered her career, preventing her from competing in the upcoming European Championships in Huelva.

Marín’s illustrious career reached its peak at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where she secured the gold medal – a historic achievement as the first non-Asian athlete to do so. She likewise boasts three World Championships titles and seven European Championships titles, cementing her legacy as a dominant force in the sport. Her success challenged the traditional dominance of Asian players in badminton.

The European Championships, scheduled to take place from April 6th to 12th in her hometown of Huelva, had been a long-held goal for Marín as a fitting farewell. However, her body has forced her to reconsider. A series of serious knee injuries – first to her right knee in 2019, then to her left knee in 2021, and most recently during the Paris 2024 Olympics – have taken their toll.

Marín first sustained a significant injury at the 2019 Indonesia Masters, suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament. She battled back from that setback, even securing a victory at the China Open, but further misfortune struck during preparations for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. She then suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and both menisci in her left knee, sidelining her from the Games. Even as she demonstrated remarkable resilience, winning the European Championship in Madrid in 2022, the injury sustained at the Paris 2024 Olympics proved to be the final blow.

“These last few months have been quite tough for me, and one of the main reasons has been my knee,” Marín confessed earlier this year. The physical strain took an emotional toll, leading her to temporarily step away from social media. She underwent further surgery this February, acknowledging that it would likely mark the end of her professional career.

Despite the heartbreak of recent injuries, Marín reflects on her career with gratitude. She stated that the outpouring of support from fans has meant more to her than any medal. “For me, the medal has been the affection I’ve received from people, that’s worth more than a gold,” she shared. Her gold medal performance in Rio on August 19, 2016, remains a defining moment for Spanish sport, and a testament to her dedication and skill.
