A 32-year-old man died in the early hours of Tuesday, April 14, 2026, after being struck by the driver of the vehicle he had just exited during a violent carjacking attempt in Maipú.

The incident occurred on Las Torres Avenue when the victim stepped out of the vehicle and was immediately targeted by criminals arriving in a car and on a motorcycle. In an effort to thwart the “encerrona”—a common type of ambush robbery—the driver reversed the vehicle to escape the attackers, inadvertently striking the passenger in the process.

The victim was rushed to Clínica Bicentenario, where he later passed away. The assailants fled the scene, abandoning a motorcycle behind, according to reports from BioBioChile.

While initial reports suggested the driver was operating via a ride-sharing app, the Western Prosecutor’s Office (Fiscalía Occidente) has since discounted that detail. This tragic outcome underscores the extreme volatility of urban crime and the split-second decisions drivers develop when facing violent robberies.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash and the identities of the fugitives.
