The Romano Fafard Returns: ‘Dans une galaxie près de chez vous 3’ Secures Funding

Fans of the cult classic space odyssey can prepare for blast-off once again. The crew of the Romano Fafard is officially returning to the substantial screen in Dans une galaxie près de chez vous 3, which has just received critical financial backing from Téléfilm Canada.

The project marks a major cinematic revival for the franchise, which evolved from a popular television series in the 1990s and 2000s and previously saw a film release in 2008. This new installment will be directed by Yan England (known for Fanny), with a screenplay penned by Pierre-Yves Bernard and Claude Legault. The plot will see the crew resume their mission in search of a new planet, continuing the saga of the Canadian spacecraft’s journey through the cosmos.

The funding is part of a larger initiative by Téléfilm Canada’s production assistance program for the French-language market. According to reports on April 14, 2026, a total of 12 films will share an $18 million envelope. This strategic investment underscores a significant push for diverse francophone storytelling, ranging from historical dramas to family-oriented animation.

Other notable projects receiving support alongside the space epic include:

  • L’amour au temps des satellites: A new drama from director Sophie Deraspe.
  • Arsenal: A French-Quebec co-production written and directed by Pier-Philippe Chevigny, featuring screenplay contributions from Chloé Robichaud.
  • TREMBLAY-BRASSARD: A comedy from Émile Gaudreault, who collaborated with Eric K. Boulianne for the project.
  • KIKI: A co-production with Belgium directed by Nixon Colin.
  • L’Agent Jean ! : La fin des mondes: A big-screen adaptation of Alex A.’s comic book character, directed by Félix Larivière.
  • Santa Claude (dir. Guillaume Lambert) and Simon et le sortilège (dir. Annick Blanc), both of which are family-focused features.

The return of the Romano Fafard comes nearly two decades after the previous film, signaling a nostalgic yet fresh chapter for one of the most recognized sci-fi properties in the region. The announcement ensures that the quest for a new home for humanity—originally set in 2039—will once again capture the imagination of audiences on the big screen.
