Vienna police are preparing a major security operation for the upcoming Vienna City Marathon, with approximately 500 officers set to be deployed to ensure the safety of nearly 49,000 runners and hundreds of thousands of spectators.
The comprehensive security plan, developed in coordination with emergency services and event organizers, includes traffic restrictions, access controls, and visible patrols across the race route. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner emphasized that while there is no specific threat level, authorities remain vigilant given the current geopolitical climate.
“Sporting events of this scale naturally attract increased attention, and we are prepared for all possible scenarios,” Karner stated during a briefing at City Hall alongside Vienna’s police president and emergency response leaders.
Police spokesperson Thomas Losko confirmed that units including traffic police, rapid response teams, bicycle patrols, and civilian support staff will be involved in the operation. He added that, based on past events, no major incidents are anticipated.
The Austrian Red Cross will similarly support the event with 300 personnel and 30 vehicles, expecting to handle around 500 medical interventions ranging from minor issues like blisters to more serious cases such as collapses.
The 43rd edition of the Vienna City Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, 2026, and will be broadcast live on ORF 1 starting at 8:30 a.m.
