Interest in electric vehicles in Bulgaria has surged by 55% since the beginning of the year, according to the latest registration data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In the first quarter of 2026, 829 new fully electric vehicles were registered in the M1 and N1 categories, marking a significant increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Electric vehicles now account for 6.5% of the country’s total automotive market, up from 4.2% in the first quarter of 2025 and 5.2% at the complete of last year. While this figure remains below the European average of 18.8%, it surpasses adoption rates in countries such as Japan.
The latest rankings show a shift in consumer preferences, with Hyundai leading the market at 116 registrations, followed closely by Renault at 93. Tesla, which previously held the top position, recorded 63 new registrations, placing it third. BMW and Kia followed with 60 and 56 registrations respectively.
Notably, the Tesla Model Y has lost its position as the most popular electric vehicle model in Bulgaria, reflecting broader changes in buyer behavior amid growing competition from other manufacturers.
