President Claudia Sheinbaum has invited Luisa María Alcalde to join her cabinet as legal advisor, according to multiple Mexican news outlets reporting on April 22, 2026.

The invitation follows Alcalde’s expected departure from her role as national leader of the Morena party, a position she has held for only a few months. Sources close to the party indicate that her exit is imminent, with Alcalde reportedly already beginning the process of saying goodbye to her inner team.

Sheinbaum confirmed the invitation during a public statement, noting that Alcalde would take over the role of legal advisor to the presidency, a position currently held by Esthela Damián, who is preparing to run for governor of Guerrero in the 2027 elections.

According to political sources, the transition within Morena’s leadership would see Carolina Rangel assume the party’s leadership on an interim basis, while Ariadna Montiel, the current secretary of welfare, is expected to be formally named as the new national leader during Morena’s upcoming national congress.

Esthela Damián is also expected to shift roles, moving into the party’s organization secretary position, replacing Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, commonly known as “Andy,” who is also anticipated to step down from his role as Morena’s general secretary.

The developments approach amid internal recalibration within Morena as the party prepares for the 2027 midterm elections. Observers note that the leadership changes follow recent electoral setbacks in Durango and Veracruz, as well as growing tensions with allied parties such as the Labor Party (PT) and the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM).

Reports indicate that Alcalde had previously conditioned her continued leadership on a direct request from President Sheinbaum, a condition now fulfilled by the cabinet invitation.

While Morena has not issued an official statement on the leadership transition, multiple outlets have cited anonymous party sources confirming that the reshuffle is underway and aligned with the president’s broader cabinet adjustments.

The changes mark a significant moment in the party’s structure, reflecting both internal realignment and the expanding influence of the federal administration in shaping Morena’s forward-looking strategy.
