Ibovespa & Dollar Today: Market Updates & Economic News

Brazilian stocks experienced a significant downturn on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, as the Ibovespa index closed down 1.65% at 192,888.95 points. The decline followed a session of profit-taking and risk reassessment, particularly impacting the banking sector, while global markets showed positive momentum.

The Ibovespa’s performance contrasted sharply with gains seen in New York, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.69%, the S&P 500 increased 1.05% and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.64% to a new record high. These gains were spurred by news of an extension to a truce agreement involving the United States and Iran.

Despite the broader market weakness, Petrobras (PETR3, PETR4) provided some support to the Ibovespa, benefiting from a more than 3% increase in oil prices in London and New York trading. However, this was not enough to offset the negative pressure from the financial sector.

Among the major blue-chip stocks, Bradesco ON (BBDC3) saw a correction of 2.66%, while Banco do Brasil ON (BBAS3) fell 3.62% at the close of trading. Vale ON (VALE3), a key component of the Ibovespa, also declined, dropping 1.70% to close at R$87.22.

This closing level for the Ibovespa was the lowest since April 8, 2026. The index has accumulated a loss of 1.45% for the week, but remains up 2.90% for the month and 19.71% year-to-date. Trading volume reached R$26.6 billion during the session.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Dollar edged closer to the R$5.00 mark on Friday, April 24, 2026, as investors awaited decisions regarding interest rates in both Brazil and the United States. The exchange rate hovered near stability at the start of the day, but gained strength amid a worsening external economic outlook.

The Ibovespa’s decline reflects a complex interplay of factors, including domestic economic concerns and global geopolitical developments. Investors are closely monitoring central bank policies in both Brazil and the U.S. For indications of future monetary policy direction.
