Lithuania’s Auto Market Hits Record High as Toyota Seizes Top Spot
Lithuania’s automotive sector reached a historic milestone in 2023, with new vehicle registrations climbing to an all-time high. A total of 71,355 new cars were registered throughout the year, representing an 11.2% increase compared to 2022 figures. This surge underscores a robust recovery in consumer demand and a shifting landscape in brand preference across the region.

The year was marked by a significant shake-up in market leadership. For the first time, Toyota has emerged as the leading brand in the Lithuanian market, recording 4,554 registrations. This performance displaced the previous frontrunners, with Volkswagen sliding into second place with 4,293 units, followed by Kia in third with 3,894 registrations. This realignment in brand dominance highlights a changing competitive dynamic as manufacturers vie for market share in the Baltic states.
Parallel to the growth in overall volume, the transition toward sustainable mobility has accelerated sharply. Data reveals a decisive pivot toward electrification, with both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid segments seeing double-digit growth.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) saw the most aggressive expansion, with registrations jumping 38.2% to reach 7,041 units. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) also experienced strong gains, rising 33.2% to a total of 6,754 units. Combined, these “electrified” vehicles accounted for 13,795 registrations in 2023—a substantial increase from the 10,000 units recorded in 2022.
Electrified models now represent approximately 19.3% of all new car registrations in the country. This trend underscores a broader systemic move toward decarbonization in the transport sector and suggests that consumer appetite for alternative powertrains is becoming mainstream.
