Incorporating eggs into a weekly diet may offer substantial protection against cognitive decline. According to new research from Loma Linda University Health, adults aged 65 and older who eat eggs regularly show a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

The study indicates that the most pronounced benefits are seen in those who consume eggs nearly every day. Individuals who ate at least one egg per day for five or more days each week experienced up to a 27% reduction in their risk of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Researchers found that even modest increases in egg intake provided brain-boosting advantages. Those who consumed eggs between two and four times per week saw approximately a 20% lower risk, while individuals eating eggs just one to three times per month were linked to a 17% reduction in risk.

New Research Suggests Eating Eggs May Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk

“Compared to never eating eggs, eating at least five eggs per week can decrease risk of Alzheimer’s,” said Joan Sabaté, MD, DrPH, a professor at Loma Linda University School of Public Health and the study’s principal investigator.

These findings suggest that small, accessible dietary adjustments could make a meaningful difference in long-term brain health as people age. The ability to reduce risk through a common, affordable food item underscores the potential impact of nutrition on public health strategies for dementia prevention.

The relationship between eggs and health has evolved over time. While previous beliefs suggested that the dietary cholesterol in eggs could negatively impact the body’s cholesterol levels, more recent evidence indicates that moderate consumption does not increase “disappointing” cholesterol or heighten the risk of heart disease.

Beyond cognitive health, the high nutritive value of chicken eggs supports other physiological benefits. Experts note that eggs can aid in protein synthesis for muscles and increase satiety, which helps with overall weight management. Researchers emphasize that moderate egg consumption should be viewed as part of a balanced diet to maximize overall health benefits.
