Nature as a Muse: New Contemporary Art Exhibition to Debut in Latvia
A new exhibition exploring the symbiotic relationship between the natural world and artistic creation is set to open in Latvia. Titled “Nature as a Muse: The Place Where Art is Born,” the showcase will be hosted at the Dauderi branch of the National History Museum of Latvia beginning May 16, 2026.
The exhibition is organized as part of the “Artists and Their Muses” project, an initiative by the Art and Fashion Riga art platform. By blending traditional academic art with contemporary perspectives, the event reflects a broader trend in the Baltic region of utilizing historic estate museums to bridge the gap between classical heritage and modern expression.
Featuring contributions from several dozen artists, including prominent figures from Latvian academic art and various international creators, the exhibition aims to provide a nuanced exploration of the muse as a space of inspiration. The curated works are intended to show how artists play with ideas and reflect the passage of time within their pieces.
Due to the high number of participating artists and the spatial constraints of the venue, the museum will periodically rotate the artworks throughout the duration of the show. The exhibition will feature a diverse array of media, ranging from traditional paintings to sculptures crafted from bronze, glass, and stone by renowned Latvian artists. In a multidisciplinary twist, the collection will also include specially painted dresses inspired by the artists’ works, suggesting an evolving approach to contemporary Latvian art.
The public is invited to the official opening on May 16, 2026, at 5:00 PM in the Dauderi Grand Salon. A second opening, marking the debut of an updated selection of works, will take place at the same location on June 6, 2026, at 5:00 PM. Admission to both opening events is free of charge.
Complementing the exhibition, the museum has scheduled two professional masterclasses in the Dauderi garden. On May 16, 2026, at 2:00 PM, artist Alexei Naumov will lead a painting session. This will be followed by a second masterclass on June 6, 2026, at 2:00 PM, conducted by Professor Imants Vecozols.
