Blackout at Kaunas Arena Serves as Wake-Up Call for Emergency Preparedness

A sudden power failure during a Žalgiris basketball game was not a technical glitch, but a calculated effort to warn the public about the critical need for emergency readiness. The blackout, which plunged the Kaunas Arena into darkness, was designed as a signal that unforeseen crises can occur at any moment, making personal responsibility for safety and health a necessity for every resident.

The initiative was organized through a partnership between the Žalgiris basketball club, the emergency preparedness platform LT72, and Baltijos lizdas, a non-governmental organization focused on community empowerment. By simulating a total loss of power, organizers sought to emphasize that being prepared for extreme conditions is a vital duty to ensure the wellbeing of individuals and their families.

This simulation underscores a significant gap in public health and safety readiness. According to a survey conducted last year, 70% of citizens reported that they do not feel prepared for unexpected emergency situations. While the data suggests that over 70% of people know the correct procedures for handling fires or strong winds, only about half of the population possesses the necessary supplies to survive for at least 72 hours independently.

The drive for increased preparedness follows a rise in crisis events within Lithuania. In the month leading up to May 11, 2026, severe storms resulted in power outages for tens of thousands of households. Such extreme circumstances pose direct risks to the health, safety, and property of the population, highlighting the fragility of critical infrastructure.

Public health experts and organizers suggest that in the event of a national emergency, residents should be equipped to survive for 72 hours without government assistance. This level of readiness includes maintaining an adequate supply of food, water, and clothing, as well as ensuring that households can remain functional even when electricity, water, and other communications are severed.

As the frequency of unforeseen crises grows, the ability to maintain personal energy independence is becoming a critical component of overall community resilience. To encourage this transition, the initiative included a prize for a randomly selected training participant, consisting of a VIP experience at the Žalgiris arena and a home green energy generator-battery designed to provide electricity during power failures.
