Right-Wing Publication Criticizes Taylor Swift’s New Album, “The Tortured Poets Department”

A conservative online magazine published a critical review of Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” citing concerns over its lyrical content and perceived lack of maturity.

The review, released yesterday, described the album as containing “vulgarity” and “indecent” songs, with eight of the twelve tracks labeled as explicit. The author argued that Swift has moved away from the persona of a “wry diarist” and now “insists on her own vulgarity.” The publication, founded in 2020 by a group of Gen Z women with backgrounds in conservative media and politics, aims to provide representation for conservative women, a demographic they believe is underserved by mainstream outlets. It currently boasts nearly 300,000 followers on Instagram, including White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The critique also lamented the loss of what the author described as Swift’s earlier “innocent girl” image and “small-town” sound, suggesting that the artist is no longer a positive influence for young women. “The words they memorize, the women they emulate, and the cultural ideas they internalize will shape them for years to come,” the review stated. This criticism arrives amidst a complex relationship between Swift and the right, as some conservatives recently celebrated her relationship with NFL player Travis Kelce, viewing it as a potential shift away from progressive politics – a narrative this review actively rejects. Swift’s political endorsements have previously drawn ire from Republicans, including a direct rebuke from former President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform.

Despite the criticism, Swift’s album has broken records, achieving the largest first-week sales numbers ever recorded, surpassing Adele’s 2015 release, 25. This success underscores Swift’s continued dominance in the music industry and her broad appeal, even in the face of political scrutiny. You can find more information about album sales records at Billboard. Swift’s team has been contacted for comment regarding the review, and further discussion surrounding the album’s themes and reception is expected to continue in the coming days.
