Keifer Sykes’ Jersey Retired by UW-Green Bay Men’s Basketball

Keifer Sykes’ No. 24 jersey was officially retired by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball program yesterday, honoring the standout player’s contributions to the team.

The ceremony took place at the Kress Center before a team scrimmage, where a video montage of Sykes’ highlights and congratulatory messages from former coaches and teammates was played. Sykes, a Chicago native who played for the Phoenix from 2011 to 2015, became the sixth player in program history to have his jersey hung in the rafters, joining Tony Bennett, Jeff Nordgaard, Dennis Woelffer, Tom Anderson, and Ron Ripley. “It’s very special. Feels surreal. I just feel overwhelmed with love, overwhelmed with joy,” Sykes said. “It means a lot for my family. It means a lot for the community here.”

Sykes was a two-time Horizon League Player of the Year and remains the program’s second all-time leading scorer. His success story is particularly notable given he was one of only two Division I programs to offer him a scholarship. The retirement of his jersey recognizes not only his on-court achievements but also his current role as the team’s general manager, a position he took in August to help with recruiting and player mentorship – a crucial role in the evolving landscape of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) regulations. He emphasized the importance of character and communication for aspiring athletes, stating, “I just tell them to do things to help them stand out in front of coaches, have high character…have the intangibles.”

Sykes’ impact extends beyond statistics; he nearly led Green Bay to an NCAA Tournament berth during his senior season. The jersey retirement serves as an inspiration for current and future Phoenix players, demonstrating the program’s commitment to recognizing exceptional achievement. University officials stated they look forward to Sykes continuing to contribute to the program’s success in his new role and fostering a strong connection with alumni, as detailed on the UW-Green Bay Athletics website.
