Wolfgang Tillmans Reveals Story Behind Iconic Frank Ocean ‘Blonde’ Album Cover
Photographer Wolfgang Tillmans has shared the unexpected origin story of the now-famous cover image for Frank Ocean’s 2016 album, Blonde, revealing it wasn’t initially intended for the project.
The photograph, depicting Ocean standing in a shower with short green hair, was originally commissioned for the 10th-anniversary edition of Fantastic Man magazine. Tillmans explained in a recent interview that coordinating the shoot proved challenging. “It took a few weeks to get Frank and me together,” he said. “We had several attempts, only for him to call at short notice. ‘Something came up, I can’t come.’” Ocean ultimately traveled overnight from London to Berlin for a productive photoshoot.
However, legal issues prevented Fantastic Man from publishing the images. Ocean’s lawyers sent a letter vetoing their use in the magazine. A year later, in 2016, Ocean contacted Tillmans with an unexpected request. “He got in touch and said, ‘Can I use this for the cover of my next album [Blonde]?’,” Tillmans recounted. This cover became instantly iconic, influencing visual aesthetics in music and beyond.
The collaboration extended beyond the album cover; Ocean also included Tillmans’ unreleased track “Device Control” on his 2016 visual album, Endless. “So I had music on the first album and the cover of the second,” Tillmans reflected. Tillmans is currently exhibiting his work at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, showcasing his significant contributions to contemporary queer art, as detailed by the Smithsonian Institution.
Tillmans is continuing his exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, while Ocean has not commented on the story as of today, October 12, 2025.
