Def Leppard Achieves Landmark Sales Record with ‘Pyromania’ and ‘Hysteria’

Today, October 14, 2025, marks the 37th anniversary of Def Leppard becoming the first band in modern music history to sell seven million copies of two consecutive albums – a record-breaking feat achieved with 1983’s Pyromania and 1987’s Hysteria.

Both albums were significant commercial successes upon their release, with Pyromania reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 18 on the UK Albums chart, while Hysteria topped both charts in 1987. Both records have since been certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America, signifying sales of over 10 million units each in the United States. This achievement demonstrated a shift in the music industry towards embracing a more polished, radio-friendly sound within the hard rock and heavy metal genres.

Pyromania, produced by John “Mutt” Lange, is often credited with helping to launch the pop-metal movement of the 1980s, gaining substantial exposure through early MTV airplay. Hysteria, which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and spawned seven charting singles, faced significant production challenges, including drummer Rick Allen’s recovery from a tragic car accident that resulted in the loss of his arm. Allen’s perseverance and Lange’s continued involvement were crucial to the album’s completion and ultimate success; you can learn more about the album’s creation here.

The success of these albums solidified Def Leppard’s place as one of the most popular and influential rock bands of their era, paving the way for future generations of artists. Representatives for the band have stated they are currently preparing a special commemorative release to celebrate the anniversary, with details expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
