Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand’s Legacy Detailed in New Book
Today, Jordan Brand announced the release of “Air Jordan,” a comprehensive book celebrating the 40-year impact of the brand and its namesake, Michael Jordan.
This marks the first officially authorized publication dedicated not to Jordan’s biography or athletic achievements, but to the cultural phenomenon he and his brand have created. Divided into six chapters – representing Jordan’s six NBA championships – the book explores how Jordan Brand revolutionized design, business, pop culture, and athletic style. It features previously unseen materials from both Jordan’s personal archives, including his college cap and gown and childhood trophies, and Nike’s corporate collection.
The book is filled with visual elements, including gatefolds showcasing hundreds of hip-hop lyrics referencing Jordan and his iconic advertisements. “Sorry to disappoint you, but this is not a book about the game of basketball. Instead, it’s a celebration. A celebration of 40 years of greatness,” Jordan states in the book’s opening. The enduring popularity of Air Jordans has significantly influenced the sneaker resale market, now a multi-billion dollar industry.
“Air Jordan” will be available in two formats: an exclusive, limited-edition “Ultimate” version ($2,300) limited to 1,000 hand-numbered copies, complete with an Italian-made silk scarf, and a “Classic” edition ($123). Both versions are available for purchase at Assouline.com while supplies last. For more on the history of iconic sneakers, explore Smithsonian Magazine’s deep dive into sneaker history.
The book’s release is expected to further solidify the legacy of Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand, continuing to inspire future generations of designers, athletes, and entrepreneurs.
