UNLV’s Dan Mullen Declines Arkansas Coaching Job, Endorses Gus Malzahn
UNLV Head Coach Dan Mullen stated unequivocally today he has “0.0 interest” in the vacant Arkansas Razorbacks head coaching position, but publicly advocated for Florida State offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn to be considered for the role.
Mullen addressed speculation about his potential departure from UNLV, where he has led the team to a 6-0 start in his first season, in a post on X yesterday. “0.0 interest in Arkansas,” Mullen wrote in response to a report discussing his rumored interest. “Thanks for the shout out though. Y’all need to hire Gus Malzahn.” Malzahn boasts a career record of 105-62 as a head coach, previously leading programs at Auburn and Arkansas State.
Despite being mentioned as a candidate for multiple openings – including UCLA and, as suggested by former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, Penn State – Mullen has repeatedly affirmed his commitment to the Rebels. “I’ll be here. … You want me to do that? I’m gonna be the head coach at UNLV next year,” Mullen told reporters this week. This stability is particularly important in college football’s current landscape, heavily influenced by the transfer portal.
Mullen’s strong start at UNLV has quickly turned the program around, and his commitment to remaining with the team provides a sense of continuity as they prepare for their Week 8 matchup against Boise State. Coaching searches often hinge on finding candidates who can quickly establish stability and build a winning culture, and Mullen’s decisive statement aims to provide that for UNLV.
