Remains of Three Hostages Returned from Gaza, U.S. Citizen Among Those Identified
Israel announced today the recovery of the remains of three hostages held in Gaza, with U.S. President Donald Trump confirming that the remains of American-Israeli citizen Omer Neutra were among those returned.
The remains were handed over by Hamas and will undergo forensic examination for official identification before being returned to families, according to the Israeli military. Hamas stated the remains were discovered in a tunnel in southern Gaza. This exchange marks the return of remains of 17 hostages since a ceasefire began on October 10, with 11 still remaining in Gaza. Neutra, a tank platoon commander in the Israel Defense Forces and a native of Long Island, New York, was believed to have been killed during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack that initiated the conflict.
“They were thrilled, in one sense, but in another sense, obviously, it’s not too great,” President Trump said of Neutra’s parents after speaking with them. The return of hostage remains is a deeply emotional process for families, as evidenced by recent rallies urging restraint and continued efforts toward a lasting peace, like those held Saturday night in Jerusalem. Israel has also been releasing the remains of 15 Palestinians in exchange for the return of Israeli hostages.
The exchange of remains is a central component of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement, which aims to establish a 20-point plan including an international stabilization force. The ongoing conflict began with the Hamas attack that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths in Israel and the abduction of 251 hostages, and has since led to over 68,800 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry – figures that have been disputed by Israel. Further details on the conflict can be found at the Associated Press’s coverage.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that “pockets of Hamas” remain in parts of Gaza controlled by Israeli forces and will be eliminated.
