Portishead Founder Geoff Barrow Launches Film Production Company, Announces First Release

Geoff Barrow, best known as the founder of the influential trip-hop group Portishead, is expanding his creative output with the launch of a film production arm under his Invada label, and will be answering reader questions about his work.

Barrow, who grew up in Somerset, England, including the town of Portishead that lent its name to his band, first rose to prominence with Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley in the 1990s. Beyond Portishead, which continues to perform occasionally – most recently at a benefit concert for Palestine in September – Barrow formed the psych-rock group Beak> in 2007, departing in 2024 to pursue other projects. He also founded the record label Invada, responsible for releasing music by artists like Billy Nomates and soundtracks to popular series such as Stranger Things.

His work extends into film scoring, collaborating with Ben Salisbury on projects including Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War, among others. Barrow’s new venture will debut with Game, a thriller set against the 1993 rave scene, co-written by Barrow and starring Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods, set for release on November 21. This move signifies a broadening of Barrow’s artistic vision beyond music and into visual storytelling, potentially influencing the independent film landscape.

Barrow will be answering questions about Game and his broader career in a Q&A session, with submissions accepted until November 6. Invada Records has announced details on how to participate.

Readers are encouraged to submit their questions in the comments section before Thursday, November 6, according to an announcement today.
