Liverpool’s Calvin Ramsay Targeted for January Loan Move
Liverpool Football Club is planning a loan move for right-back Calvin Ramsay in January, following a recent return to form and a start against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup.
Ramsay, 22, made his first start for the Reds since November 2022 in Wednesday’s match against Palace, despite a 3-0 defeat. Under-21s manager Rob Page expressed his satisfaction with Ramsay’s progress, stating, “[I’m] really impressed.” Page added that a concerted effort from the medical team and coaching staff has prepared Ramsay for a potential loan spell.
Signed from Aberdeen in the summer of 2022, Ramsay’s development has been hampered by a series of injuries, including knee surgery in 2023, and unsuccessful loan spells at Preston, Bolton, Wigan, and Kilmarnock. His return to Scotland also removed his Premier League homegrown eligibility. However, he remains in Liverpool’s Premier League squad, and a recent injury to Jeremie Frimpong could open up limited opportunities for first-team minutes. A successful loan could be vital for the young player to regain consistent match fitness and build towards a sustained role in the squad. Page praised Ramsay’s performance against Palace, saying, “I thought his performance…was excellent.”
Ramsay was rested in the under-21s’ recent 4-2 win over Middlesbrough U21s to manage his workload after playing against Palace and in a previous under-21s match. Page explained the decision was to “protect his minutes.” Officials are now actively exploring loan options for Ramsay to continue his development, with a view to assessing his next steps in January. The club will continue to monitor Ramsay’s progress and evaluate potential loan opportunities in the coming weeks.
