Russian Strikes Cause Widespread Power Outages Across Ukraine

Large-scale Russian strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have resulted in emergency power cuts affecting numerous regions, officials reported today.

The Ukrainian Energy Minister, Svitlana Vasylivna Hrynchuk, announced on Telegram that emergency power cuts, potentially lasting up to 16 hours in some areas, have been implemented while crews work to repair damage to the power supply. “Emergency power cuts have been introduced in a number of regions of Ukraine,” Hrynchuk stated, adding that they “will be canceled after the situation in the power system stabilizes.” A company operator, posting on Facebook, lamented that “We lost everything we were restoring 24 hours a day! Every time the enemy strikes even more brutally, even more cynically.”

The Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Poltava regions were the primary targets of the attacks, according to the Ukrainian air force. Beyond power grids, strikes have also impacted heat and water supplies in many cities, and have even targeted the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear plants. These attacks on critical infrastructure are part of a pattern observed throughout the conflict, aiming to degrade Ukraine’s ability to provide essential services to its population.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, condemned the strikes, particularly those near nuclear facilities, stating on X, “Russia is deliberately endangering nuclear safety in Europe. We call for an urgent meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors to respond to these unacceptable risks.” Concerns about nuclear safety have been raised internationally, with the International Atomic Energy Agency closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine. Officials say repairs are underway, but the extent of the damage and the ongoing threat of further attacks make a full restoration of power uncertain.
