TikTok Influencer Killed in Mali, Highlighting Worsening Security Crisis
A popular TikTok influencer was fatally shot in public yesterday in Mali by suspected jihadist militants, underscoring the escalating instability and diminishing state control within the West African nation.
Mariam Cissé, who was in her 20s and had over 100,000 followers, regularly posted videos in support of the Malian army, often while wearing combat attire. According to Yehia Tandina, the mayor of the Timbuktu region, Cissé was initially abducted from a market on Friday by armed men. “The same men brought her back to Independence Square in Tonka and executed her in front of a crowd,” Tandina told the Associated Press. Cissé had reportedly received death threats prior to the attack.
While no group has formally claimed responsibility, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaida-linked organization, is known to operate in the Tonka area, approximately 90 miles from Timbuktu. The incident comes as JNIM has tightened its grip on key supply routes, imposing a fuel blockade since September that has crippled transportation and healthcare, and as the country faces increasing economic hardship. This latest event highlights the growing dangers faced by civilians in Mali, and the challenges to restoring stability.
Mali has been embroiled in conflict since 2012, following a Tuareg rebel uprising that was subsequently exploited by jihadist groups. Recent military coups in 2020 and 2021 led to the expulsion of French and UN forces and a turn towards Russia for support. The African Union expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation on Sunday, calling for international coordination. The junta is currently holding talks with international partners to address the crisis, but analysts suggest the regime’s collapse could occur within weeks or months, as detailed in recent reports from the Atlantic Council.
