Valve founder Gabe Newell, whose Steam platform dominates the PC gaming market, has reportedly made a significant personal investment with the purchase of a $500 million superyacht named Leviathan. The acquisition, first reported by Boat International and detailed by PC gamer, highlights the immense wealth generated by Newell’s success in the gaming industry and comes amid ongoing discussions regarding Steam’s revenue-sharing practices with game developers. Newell’s new vessel boasts extravagant amenities, including a submarine garage and a dedicated gaming room, illustrating a trend of luxury spending among tech executives.

Valve, the company behind the popular Steam platform, has faced ongoing scrutiny regarding its market dominance in the PC gaming space and its revenue-sharing model. The platform currently takes a 30% cut of game sales, a figure that has drawn comparisons to Epic Games Store’s 12% fee, which offers developers a larger share of revenue.

Now, Steam’s founder, Gabe Newell, appears to be enjoying the fruits of the platform’s success. Boat International reports (via PC Gamer) that Newell has recently acquired a new superyacht named Leviathan.

The vessel, which reportedly cost $500 million, was made possible in part by Newell’s ownership of the yacht’s manufacturer, Oceanco. The Leviathan is essentially a floating palace, boasting amenities such as a submarine garage, ample space for additional boats, a fully-equipped hospital with on-site nursing staff, two fitness centers, and, naturally, a dedicated gaming room outfitted with 15 high-end PCs. At 50th largest in the world, the yacht joins Newell’s existing fleet of two other yachts.

Newell commented on the project, stating:

“It is incredibly enjoyable and fun to work with the team at Oceanco; everyone is professional, creative, and dynamic. We knew we were asking for unusual things, and Oceanco embraced that with open arms. We’ve not only designed a very unusual yacht that leverages Oceanco’s strengths in innovation and design, but the team has also been willing to collaborate with us on developing the process.”

The news has sparked debate online, with some questioning whether the funds could have been better allocated, particularly towards ocean conservation given Newell’s known interest in diving. Others view the purchase as a personal indulgence. The acquisition underscores the significant wealth generated by Steam’s success and the growing trend of luxury investments among tech industry leaders.
