FRIEDEWALD Autobahn voll gesperrt
A section of Autobahn A4 was fully closed Monday following a single-vehicle crash that injured five members of a French family, including a 3-year-old boy who was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. The accident occurred around 7:50 a.m. On Sunday, February 22, 2026, near Friedewald, according to police in Fulda.
The vehicle, driven by a 35-year-old woman, reportedly veered off the roadway for an unknown reason and overturned, landing on its roof in a construction zone between the Friedewald and Bad Hersfeld exits.
All five occupants were able to exit the heavily damaged vehicle on their own. The 64-year-old grandfather, the mother, and two sons, ages 6 and 15, sustained minor injuries. The critically injured 3-year-old was transported by rescue helicopter to Klinikum Fulda hospital.
Authorities temporarily closed both directions of the A4 to facilitate rescue and recovery efforts. The westbound lanes were fully blocked for approximately two hours, while the eastbound lanes were closed for about 30 minutes to allow the rescue helicopter to land.
Police estimate the total damage from the crash to be around 10,000 euros. The incident underscores the dangers of driving in construction zones and the importance of safe travel.
Two police units, along with the Bad Hersfeld volunteer fire department, five ambulances, two emergency medical vehicles, and the rescue helicopter were dispatched to the scene. (pm/ci)+++
