Cairo – The family of the late Egyptian singer Abdel Halim Hafez, a national icon who died in 1977, is preparing legal action against a social media user for what they deem a disrespectful appropriation of the singer’s established moniker. The user’s adoption of the title “The White Nightingale” – a stark contrast to Hafez’s well-known nickname “The Dark Nightingale” – has prompted accusations of deliberate offense and legacy distortion. This case highlights the growing challenges of protecting artistic and cultural heritage in the digital space, as families and estates seek to control the narratives surrounding the work of influential figures.
The family of the late Egyptian singer Abdel Halim Hafez is preparing to take legal action against a social media user who has adopted the moniker “The White Nightingale.” The family views the online persona and accompanying content as a direct affront to the legacy of the iconic artist, who was widely known as “The Dark Nightingale.”
According to a statement released by the family, the use of the title, coupled with what they describe as sarcastic and offensive posts, is an unacceptable violation of Hafez’s artistic and personal legacy. Hafez remains a deeply revered cultural and artistic figure throughout the Arab world.
Mohamed Shabana, the late singer’s nephew, explained that the individual has repeatedly mocked and ridiculed Abdel Halim Hafez on various social media platforms, despite being asked to stop. “Any insult to the name of Abdel Halim Hafez or his history will not go unanswered,” Shabana stated, “as it is an affront to the dignity of an artist who has been a part of Egypt’s artistic identity.”
The family firmly rejects any attempts to diminish Hafez’s value or distort his image, emphasizing that protecting his artistic legacy is a paramount responsibility. This move underscores the continued importance of preserving the work of influential artists in the digital age.
The legal advisor representing Hafez’s heirs has already begun the process of filing a formal complaint with the relevant authorities. The family is seeking both financial and moral compensation for what they consider to be deliberate and ongoing abuse.
“We will remain vigilant in protecting the name of Abdel Halim Hafez from any exploitation or distortion,” the family concluded. “We will legally confront anyone who attempts to tamper with the image of an artist who is still present in the hearts of millions, despite his passing decades ago.”
