Aceh Asks UN for Aid After Floods & Landslides | 1,960 Volunteers Assist

Jakarta – The Aceh provincial government has formally requested assistance from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and UNICEF following widespread flooding and landslides that began November 26th, impacting 18 districts and cities across the region. The request for U.N. support, citing the agencies’ experience with the devastating 2004 tsunami, underscores the scale of the current disaster and the need for increased resources as recovery efforts continue. Currently, 77 organizations and nearly 2,000 volunteers are on the ground assisting with relief operations.

The Aceh provincial government has formally requested assistance from two United Nations agencies in the wake of recent flooding and landslides that have impacted the region. The request signals a growing need for international support as recovery efforts continue.

“The Aceh provincial government has officially requested the involvement of several international agencies, considering their experience with the 2004 tsunami, such as UNDP and UNICEF,” said Aceh government spokesperson Muhammad MTA on Monday, December 15, 2025, as reported by detikSumut.

Muhammad stated that 77 organizations and 1,960 volunteers are currently assisting with disaster relief in Aceh. These include local, national, and international NGOs, and officials anticipate that the number of contributing organizations and volunteers will continue to increase.

Organizations already participating in the Aceh BNPB Volunteer Desk include Save the Children, Islamic Relief, ABF, DH Charity, FKKMK UGM, Mahtan Makassar, Relawan Nusantara, Baznas, EMT AHS UGM, Koalisi NGO HAM, Katahati Institute, Orari, Yayasan Geutanyoe, and others.

“On behalf of the people of Aceh and the victims, the governor extends sincere gratitude for the goodwill and contributions being made towards Aceh’s recovery,” Muhammad said. “We hope the presence of these organizations and volunteers will continue to strengthen emergency response and recovery efforts already underway by government institutions such as the TNI, Polri, BNPB, BPBA Aceh, Basarnas, regional governments, mass organizations, and the people of Aceh.”

The flooding began on Wednesday, November 26, impacting a total of 18 districts and cities across Aceh. The hardest-hit areas include Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Timur, Aceh Utara, Bireuen, Bener Meriah, and Aceh Tengah.
