The utilize of artificial intelligence is helping to shorten development times, simplify complex processes without compromising safety, and generate documentation for regulatory approvals. A partnership between Microsoft and NVIDIA in the nuclear industry was reported by The Register.

Collaboration for the Benefit of the Nuclear Industry

Microsoft noted that the construction of nuclear power plants is a very complex process, and bringing the work into compliance with the regulations of the authorities can take years, is accompanied by complex bureaucratic procedures, consumes large financial resources, and requires processing huge amounts of data with subsequent reporting.

The corporation’s Generative AI for Permitting tool has enabled Aalo Atomics to accelerate the authorization process for its series-produced slight modular reactors by 92%. AI agents powered by Microsoft’s Copilot are optimizing design and licensing processes, while NVIDIA is working on implementing digital twin technology and high-fidelity simulation. This collaboration arrives as the demand for carbon-free energy sources increases.

The corporations’ cooperation covers the entire lifecycle of the nuclear power plant, from authorization and design to construction and commissioning. According to Microsoft Chairman Brad Smith, nuclear energy has proven to be an important source of carbon-free electricity, and the joint initiative with NVIDIA will facilitate the large-scale launch of nuclear power plants in a shorter timeframe.

In the Context of the AI Boom

Increased use of nuclear energy is seen as a solution to the growing demand for electricity caused by the boom in the construction of AI data centers. “Microsoft and NVIDIA, which have developed numerous functional AI tools (“Generative AI for Permitting”, “Planetary Computer”, “Omniverse”, AI Enterprise, “PhysicsNeMo”, CUDA-X, etc.), are interested in intensifying the construction of new nuclear power plants.” In the U.S., it currently takes approximately five years from the design stage of a nuclear power plant to its commissioning.
