As the 2025 season draws to a close, ATPTour.com is highlighting the year’s most captivating storylines with its annual ‘Best Of’ series, reflecting on the biggest rivalries, matches, and moments. This week, we examine the developing competition between Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz.
Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz engaged in a compelling rivalry throughout 2025, facing off four times in high-stakes matches at some of tennis’ most prestigious tournaments, including Wimbledon and the Nitto ATP Finals. Having met only twice previously, the pair delivered captivating performances and established themselves as two of the sport’s rising stars.
Here’s a recap of their four tour-level clashes this season:
Wimbledon Semi-Finals: Alcaraz d. Fritz 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(6)
Carlos Alcaraz battled past Taylor Fritz in a tense Wimbledon semi-final, securing his place in a third consecutive final at the All England Club. The match reached a dramatic climax as Alcaraz fought off two set points in the fourth-set tie-break, ultimately prevailing 6-4 in the tiebreaker.
Alcaraz entered the match riding a 24-match winning streak, while Fritz was coming off a title run in Eastbourne and a strong grass-court season. Despite Fritz’s impressive form, Alcaraz controlled play from the baseline, utilizing precise drop shots and a powerful second serve to keep his opponent off balance. The Spaniard’s ability to elevate his game in crucial moments proved decisive, especially when he aggressively moved to the net to deny Fritz a set point. Fritz ultimately missed an inside-out forehand on his second set point, handing Alcaraz the victory.

Laver Cup: Fritz d. Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2
Taylor Fritz finally broke through against Alcaraz, earning his first Lexus ATP Head2Head win against the Spaniard at the Laver Cup in San Francisco. Playing for Team World, Fritz delivered a dominant performance, securing a comfortable victory.
Fritz showcased fearless baseline play and converted an impressive 16 of 20 net points. He seized control in the second set, winning the final four games to seal the win. A key moment came in the opening game, where Fritz successfully defended the only two break points he faced throughout the entire match, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
“The three times I had played Carlos, he had broken me in the first game every time,” said Fritz. “Getting out of that first game was huge. I just made sure I didn’t second guess myself.”
Tokyo Final: Alcaraz d. Fritz 6-4, 6-4
Just nine days after their Laver Cup encounter, Alcaraz and Fritz met again in the final of the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo, where Alcaraz avenged his loss. The World No. 1 demonstrated his firepower and shotmaking prowess to claim the title.
Alcaraz overwhelmed Fritz from all areas of the court in a 93-minute victory. Fritz received a medical timeout at the end of the first set for treatment on his left thigh, which was subsequently taped. Hampered by the injury, the American struggled to move effectively and saw his chances of defending his 2022 Tokyo crown diminish.
“I’m really happy with the level that I played, with everything,” said Alcaraz, who overcame an early ankle scare to lift the trophy in his Tokyo debut. “Starting the week not good with the ankle, and the way that I came back from that, I’m just really happy about it.”
Nitto ATP Finals Round Robin: Alcaraz d. Fritz 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-3
Alcaraz and Fritz delivered arguably their most thrilling match of the season during the round-robin stage of the Nitto ATP Finals. Fritz carried the momentum for much of the first two sets, even taking the first set in a tiebreak and holding break points in the second. However, Alcaraz ultimately turned the tables in Turin.
A pivotal moment arrived with Fritz holding a break point in the second set. During a 19-shot rally, Alcaraz aggressively moved forward, mirroring his tactic from Wimbledon, and put away a backhand volley. Fritz had an opportunity for an overhead during the rally but chose to let the ball bounce, a decision he later regretted, stating, “I probably should have sent it out of the air.” Alcaraz eventually held serve, shifting the momentum in his favor.
Throughout the high-quality contest, both players battled for baseline position, taking risks on return and seeking opportunities to attack. Ultimately, Alcaraz locked down in the third set, delivering a clean performance to secure the victory.
“I was really relieved after the win because of everything I went through during the match,” said Alcaraz. “I wasn’t feeling the ball as well as I was in the first [match], but I’m really happy that I found a way to come back.”
