Alexa Now Available on the Web

Amazon’s artificial intelligence assistant, Alexa, is now accessible through web browsers for the first time in its more than decade-long history, the company announced Monday. The move comes as Amazon seeks to broaden the reach of its AI offerings and compete more effectively in a rapidly evolving market. Early access users of Alexa+, a premium generative AI service launched by Amazon in February 2023, can now interact with the chatbot via their web browsers by logging into their Alexa.com accounts.

The new web interface brings Amazon’s AI services closer in line with offerings from industry leaders including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Amazon has faced increasing pressure from investors to update its hardware and software to better compete in the age of generative AI.

Expanding Access to Alexa+

Previously, Alexa+ was limited to the United States and Canada, available on select newer Amazon connected devices and through the Alexa+ mobile app. “People are finding incredible value in how AI can help with all aspects of their everyday lives, and to truly serve as a personal assistant, Alexa+ needs to be available wherever they are—at home, on their phone, and now on the web,” the company stated in a blog post.

Alexa+ offers an agent AI experience, enabling users to make travel and restaurant reservations, generate weekly meal plans, and control smart home devices. The AI assistant also retains all previous conversations, preferences, and personalization settings across various platforms and Amazon Echo devices.

Access to Alexa+ currently requires users in the United States or Canada to join a waitlist or purchase a new Amazon Echo device. The paid service will be included at no extra cost for Prime members, Amazon said. The company noted that “tens of millions” of people already have access to the new service, with plans to expand availability to more users in the near future. This expansion underscores Amazon’s commitment to making its AI technology more widely available, potentially driving further adoption and engagement.
