With over a million people in France living with Alzheimer’s disease and a far greater number impacted through caregiving roles, the condition presents a meaningful challenge for families and the nation’s healthcare system[[3]]. A new theatrical production, “comme une ritournelle,” is traveling across France to illuminate the frequently enough-unseen realities faced by both those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. The play, which debuted in 2017, has gained recognition for its sensitive and nuanced portrayal of the disease and has been incorporated into educational programs for healthcare students[[1]].

More than 1 million people in France are living with Alzheimer’s disease, but the impact of the condition extends far beyond those directly diagnosed. In reality, four times that number are affected by the disease, and a staggering 12 million people across all health conditions serve as caregivers, highlighting the immense strain on families and healthcare systems.

A new theatrical production, “comme une ritournelle” (like a refrain), aims to raise public awareness of the daily challenges faced by caregivers and healthcare professionals supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s. The play, written and directed by Aurélien Jumelais, approaches this sensitive topic with nuance, emotion, and moments of levity.

“Our objective through the play ‘comme une ritournelle’ is to raise public awareness of the daily difficulties encountered by caregivers and healthcare workers facing the sick,” explains the association En Mémoire d’Eux, which supports the initiative alongside Compagnie 2ème sortie. The production, now in its 56th performance, has become recognized as a valuable educational tool for understanding and approaching the disease since its debut in 2017.

Jumelais drew inspiration from two poignant monologues written by his mother, Claudine Foucault, to illustrate the hardships experienced by those providing care. Compagnie 2ème sortie has grown into a professional troupe of nine actors, a sound and lighting technician, and a director.

The company is touring France to broaden awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. The play has also been approved by the Ministry of National Education through the “Pass culture” program, allowing it to be presented at vocational and technical high schools and institutions offering training in personal and social healthcare. Thanks to partner funding, admission to performances is free.

Following each performance on February 5, 2026, at 2:30 PM at Le Dôme in Saumur, a discussion will be facilitated jointly by the CRT SSIAD of Saumur and the Accord’Âges respite platform. This provides an opportunity for audience members to connect and share experiences related to caregiving and Alzheimer’s disease.

Reservations are recommended, even though admission is free, and can be made by contacting the association En Mémoire d’Eux at contact@enmemoiredeux.com or by calling 0670603371.
