Amazon to complete Kindle Store access for older models starting May 20 Amazon will disable access to the Kindle Store on 11 older Kindle models beginning May 20, 2026, preventing users from purchasing, borrowing, or downloading new e-books directly on those devices. The change affects Kindle devices released in 2012 or earlier, according to announcements from the company. Whereas these models will continue to function for reading content already stored on them, they will no longer be able to access the Kindle Store for new material. Amazon noted that affected devices have received support for at least 14 years, with some models supported for up to 18 years, but the technology has evolved beyond their capabilities. Users attempting to reset or re-register affected Kindles after the cutoff date will not be able to restore Kindle Store access, even if they previously had it enabled. However, existing libraries and sideloaded content will remain accessible. To ease the transition, Amazon is offering promotional discounts for customers looking to upgrade to newer Kindle models, along with credit toward e-book purchases. The company confirmed It’s notifying impacted users directly about the change and available upgrade options. The move reflects Amazon’s ongoing effort to align device support with current platform standards, particularly as newer Kindle features depend on updated hardware and software infrastructure. While the core reading function persists on older units, their ability to engage with Amazon’s evolving e-book ecosystem will end next month.
