Retro gaming enthusiasts have another reason to celebrate, as Analogue has expanded controller compatibility for its highly-regarded 3D console. A new software update now allows users to connect the Nintendo Switch Online wireless N64 controller, offering a familiar feel for classic games. The update, version 1.2.0, arrives as the demand for authentic retro experiences continues to grow, and demonstrates Analogue’s commitment to providing options for players beyond the previously available 8BitDo controller and original wired options.

The retro gaming scene received a boost today with news that the Analogue 3D now supports the Nintendo Switch Online wireless N64 controller. The Analogue 3D, launched last year, quickly became a favorite among enthusiasts seeking a premium way to revisit classic Nintendo 64 titles. When the Analogue 3D initially debuted, Analogue also announced a wireless controller manufactured by 8BitDo specifically for the console – the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth controller, which is available in a variety of colors. However, the Analogue 3D isn’t limited to just one controller option, as it also features four ports for the original wired N64 controller.
The expanded compatibility arrives with the release of 3DOS version 1.2.0, a software update that includes several bug fixes alongside the new features. Notably, the update adds support for the Nintendo 64 wireless controller designed for the Nintendo Switch Online service. Originally intended for use with the Nintendo Switch and the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, the controller can now be paired with the Analogue 3D.
The Nintendo 64 Switch Online controller retails for $54.99 and is available for purchase directly from Nintendo. However, prospective buyers will need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to complete their purchase. While more expensive than the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth controller (available for $39.99 on Amazon), the fact that it’s a full-size replica of the classic N64 controller is a significant draw for purists.
Beyond the addition of a new controller option, the 1.2.0 update includes a number of other improvements and fixes:
- Fixed compatibility issues with certain 4K screens and switches
- Addressed compatibility problems with OS graphics
- Resolved a compatibility issue with HDMI CES/eARC
- Corrected audio clipping/saturation issues
- Added game library playtime tracking
- The library now displays the date each game was added
- Library information now indicates support for the Expansion Pak and Controller Pak
- Automatic reminder when the 8BitDo 64 controller is outdated or not in D mode.
