Brussels – RSC Anderlecht is navigating a period of significant upheaval, with club chairman Michael Verschueren acknowledging a series of unexpected departures while attempting to project calm amidst a growing crisis. The situation unfolded rapidly following the dismissal of head coach Besnik Hasi, and has since seen assistant coach Lucas Biglia, technical director Olivier Renard, and interim coach Edward Still all abandon the club.

“We were a little surprised,” Verschueren stated to DAZN, regarding the recent events at the club. “The first decision we made ourselves,” he explained, referring to Hasi’s sacking, “But what happened after, we did not expect – both the departure of Biglia and Still.”

The club is currently searching for a new head coach, with Verschueren indicating they are in discussions with several candidates, but refrained from committing to a timeline for an appointment. Despite the turmoil, Verschueren insisted the club is not in “panic mode.”

“We are combative and have a very decent team,” Verschueren continued. “We looked calmly at how we could cope. I think we have chosen the best solution for today, which will determine whether we do well tonight or not.” That solution involved appointing assistant Jérémy Taravel to lead the team in their crucial Belgian Cup semi-final against Antwerp.

The instability comes at a critical juncture for Anderlecht, with poor results compounding the off-field issues. The club’s search for stability is further highlighted by the return of Michael Verschueren as non-executive chairman in November, alongside Kenneth Bornauw as CEO, a move Hasi welcomed as bringing much-needed experience and understanding of the club’s culture. Hasi expressed optimism about the appointments, citing their deep knowledge of Anderlecht.

However, the current situation has prompted strong reactions, with some observers describing it as the club’s biggest crisis in recent memory. Vandenbempt described the situation as a “crisis”, while others have painted a bleak picture of the club’s current state. Jan Mulder recently commented that watching Anderlecht’s recent matches felt like attending funerals. Mulder’s comments reflect the growing concern among fans and pundits.

Verschueren, however, remains focused on finding a solution, stating, “We recognize very well what we are doing.” The club hopes to quickly appoint a permanent head coach and restore stability both on and off the pitch. Sporza.be reports that a new coach is expected to be announced “soon.”

The immediate priority is navigating the cup tie against Antwerp, and laying the groundwork for a more stable future. This challenging period will test the leadership of Verschueren and the resilience of the Anderlecht squad.
