Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi set to become free agent as Liverpool lead race for signature Bournemouth are set to lose another key player this summer as defender Marcos Senesi prepares to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract. The 28-year-old Argentine centre-back has informed Bournemouth’s management that he will not be signing a new deal and will become a free agent when his current agreement ends. His departure follows the recent announcement that head coach Andoni Iraola will too be leaving the club after his contract expires. Senesi has attracted interest from several top European clubs, with Liverpool reportedly leading the race for his signature. The Reds are seen as the most suitable destination given their need for defensive reinforcements and Senesi’s preference to remain in the Premier League whereas joining a team qualified for European competition. Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked with the defender, though United’s transfer policy focusing on younger players may rule them out, while Chelsea’s crowded squad makes a move less likely. Senesi has expressed a desire to stay in England and join a club competing in the Champions League or Europa League, with his wage demands expected to be substantial. His performances this season have made him a highly sought-after asset, particularly as Bournemouth face a potential exodus of key players following their impressive campaign under Iraola. The coach guided the Cherries to a club-record 12-game unbeaten run in the Premier League (five wins, seven draws) before confirming his departure. Iraola, who took charge in June 2023 and renewed his contract for an additional year last season, leaves Bournemouth sitting in 11th place in the league table, well clear of relegation threats. His exit opens the door for a new managerial appointment as the club begins planning for next season. With both Iraola and Senesi set to depart, Bournemouth face a significant rebuild ahead of the summer transfer window. The club will need to identify replacements for both their head coach and starting centre-back as they aim to build on their recent progress.
