Google is setting a new standard for cross-device app usage with the introduction of Android 17. The newly developed Handoff feature enables users to seamlessly transfer app activities from one device to another. This means an email started on a smartphone can be continued without interruption on a tablet or laptop. This functionality is particularly appealing to users who frequently switch between devices and want to maintain efficient workflows.

Technically, this function requires the corresponding apps to be installed on both devices. In what’s called app-to-app mode, a direct deep-link is created to the relevant activity. If the app isn’t present on the destination device, Handoff automatically switches to a web version of the application, ensuring users can continue their work without delay. This approach highlights the growing trend of interconnected digital experiences.

Android 17 provides developers with new opportunities to optimize their apps for the Handoff function. Integration is implemented on a per-activity basis and can be activated using the setHandoffEnabled() method. Additional data secures the activity’s status, while the onHandoffActivityRequested() callback provides all the necessary information for a smooth transfer. These technical details are crucial for ensuring a seamless user experience.

Although the Handoff function isn’t yet active in the Android 17 Beta 1, its potential is already apparent. The taskbar, used to display available activities, is currently only available on foldables, tablets, and large screens. However, this could change in the future if the function becomes available for desktop Android systems. Owners of a Pixel 6 or newer models can already try the beta version and get a first impression of the new possibilities.
