Apple is preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market, with reports suggesting the company is aiming to redefine the user experience in this emerging category. After years of observing the market, Apple is now finalizing details for its first foldable iPhone, expected to launch in 2026.
According to recent leaks from Chinese sources on the Weibo platform, Apple isn’t simply looking to compete with existing foldable phones, but to offer a fundamentally different experience. The device is anticipated to feature a book-style folding design, boasting a 7.58-inch internal display when fully opened, effectively bridging the gap between smartphone and tablet functionality. Al Jazeera reports that a 5.25-inch external display will also be included, allowing users to quickly access essential features without unfolding the device.
In a move that deviates from current industry trends, Apple reportedly plans to forgo its Face ID 3D facial recognition technology in this initial foldable model. The company is also omitting under-display fingerprint sensors, opting instead to integrate a “Touch ID” sensor into the side button – a feature previously used in some iPad models. This decision is reportedly aimed at minimizing the device’s thickness and simplifying its engineering complexity. Al Arabiya details these specifications, which suggest a focus on practicality and user comfort.
The move into foldable devices represents a significant step for Apple, signaling a broader commitment to exploring new form factors and display technologies. While other manufacturers have already released foldable phones, Apple’s entry is expected to further accelerate innovation and competition in this space. Further reports indicate that Apple is also developing a “Flip” style foldable phone for release alongside the “Fold” model.
Looking ahead to 2027, Apple is also planning to launch the iPhone 20 Pro, potentially replacing the iPhone 19 Pro. This continued investment in both established and emerging smartphone technologies underscores Apple’s commitment to maintaining its position at the forefront of the mobile industry.
