Nintendo’s Virtual Boy accessory for the Switch and Switch 2 consoles will support Switch games featuring virtual reality modes, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, it has been confirmed.

VGC reports that all four games that received support with the Labo VR kit are functional with the new Virtual Boy headset. The publication has received both the full Virtual Boy version and the cardboard version of the accessory, both of which are exclusively available through the My Nintendo store.

The headsets are designed to perform with the Nintendo Classics: Virtual Boy application, scheduled for release on February 17, which allows users to play a selection of Virtual Boy games in 3D.

Prior to the application’s availability, VGC tested the headset with the four Switch games that previously gained VR support following the launch of the Nintendo Labo VR kit, including:

  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

The Labo cardboard headset utilizes two lenses placed in front of the Switch screen, displaying separate images for each eye to create a 3D effect, and employs motion tracking to adjust the camera based on head movement. This technology represents a relatively accessible entry point into VR gaming for console users.

VGC confirmed that the Virtual Boy accessory functions on the same principle, meaning the VR modes within the aforementioned games are fully operational with the new headset.

Given the importance of free head movement for a compelling VR experience, the cardboard version of the headset is considered the better option for VR gaming on the Switch, as the full version is designed to be placed on a desk and remain stationary. The main version comes with a red filter on the lenses by default, but it can be removed, allowing VR modes to be played in full color.

VGC also confirmed that the Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild retains the VR option, enabling the entire game to be played in VR even with the upgraded version.
