Apple’s Siri Upgrade to Leverage Google’s Gemini AI

Apple is partnering with Google to integrate the Gemini AI models into its Siri virtual assistant, a move expected to deliver a more capable and personalized user experience. The multi-year collaboration, announced on January 12, 2026, will utilize Google’s Gemini and cloud technology for Apple Foundation Models, according to a joint statement.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users,” Apple stated. This partnership marks a significant shift for Apple, which has largely remained on the sidelines of the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence seen since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The integration of Gemini is intended to power a new iteration of Siri, offering a more personalized and intelligent assistant. Apple CEO Tim Cook reiterated the structure of the partnership during the company’s Q1 2026 earnings call on January 30, 2026, explaining that Google’s AI technology would provide the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models. Cook noted the collaboration will allow Apple to “unlock a lot of experiences and innovate in a key way.”

Despite the collaboration with Google, Apple will continue to run the models on its own devices and Private Cloud Compute, maintaining its industry-leading privacy standards. The company also continues to develop its own artificial intelligence technology independently, but clarified that these efforts do not replace Google’s role in the personalized Siri system. “You should think of it as a collaboration,” Cook said.

The deal, reportedly worth approximately $1 billion annually, signals growing trust in Google’s AI agenda and its resurgence against competitors like OpenAI. According to reports, discussions between the two companies began as early as August 2025. The move highlights the increasing reliance on external AI expertise as tech companies race to enhance their virtual assistant capabilities.

While the financial details of the agreement remain undisclosed, Apple framed the integration of Gemini as a feature across its platforms rather than a discrete revenue driver. However, some concerns have been raised regarding the level of privacy offered by the Gemini-powered Siri. Clubic reported that Google’s claims about Siri’s privacy may not be as robust as Apple initially suggested.

Initial rollout of the upgraded Siri features is expected later in 2026, though some features may be delayed beyond the initial iOS 26.4 release. AppSystem reported.
