Apple and Spectrum are partnering to bring a new level of immersion to NBA fans, beginning January 9, 2025, with Los Angeles Lakers games in Apple Immersive format for Apple Vision Pro users. The collaboration marks an early test case for spatial computing in live sports broadcasting, potentially reshaping how fans experience games [[3]]. Initial broadcasts will be limited to Lakers fans within Southern California, Hawaii, and parts of Nevada, requiring a Spectrum subscription to access the full experience. This rollout represents a notable investment in next-generation viewing technology as Apple continues to expand the capabilities of its Vision Pro headset [[1]].
Apple will begin offering Los Angeles Lakers games in Apple Immersive format to Apple Vision Pro users starting January 9, 2025. The new viewing experience, a collaboration between Apple and Spectrum, aims to deliver a more immersive 3D broadcast for NBA fans.
Regional Availability and Access
The Apple Immersive basketball broadcasts will be available through Spectrum SportsNet and the NBA app. Currently, the live broadcasts are limited to the Los Angeles Lakers’ broadcast region, which includes Southern California, Hawaii, and select areas of Nevada. Viewers will need a Spectrum network subscription or a service package that includes Spectrum SportsNet. Apple will provide out-of-market viewers with access to replays and highlights of games, though the immersive format will not be available in Canada, China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan at this time.
Immersive Technology and Multi-View Experience
Apple states that the immersive experience powered by Spectrum Front Row supports streaming rates up to 150Mb/s and offers seven unique camera angles. These views include the scoreboard view, under the basket, a panoramic view from the top of the arena, the player tunnel, and a courtside roaming perspective. Game analysis will be provided by Mark Rogondino and former Lakers forward Danny Green. The 3D display technology will present data such as player rosters, shot clocks, and scores as if floating in front of the viewer, complemented by spatial audio to create a more realistic, in-arena feel. This represents a significant step in leveraging spatial computing to enhance live sports viewing.
Game Schedule
The first replay will be available on January 11 for any Apple Vision Pro user with a free NBA ID. Initial live broadcast dates include January 9, February 5, February 20, March 5, March 10, and March 30. A complete game schedule with specific times is available on the Apple website.
