A recently released video appears to document the February 5th attack on the security detail of Colombian Senator Jairo Castellanos, a candidate for Congress, in Fortul, Arauca. The footage shows multiple individuals opening fire on the senator’s armored vehicle, according to reports.

The video, which authorities say is a key piece of evidence, depicts at least five assailants. One man is clearly visible with a rifle, smiling as he participates in the attack. Another is seen from behind, wearing an orange shirt and a green military-style vest with ammunition.

The incident occurred while Castellanos’ vehicle, along with a second vehicle carrying three of his advisors, were traveling to Yopal, Casanare, to pick up the senator, who was reportedly campaigning in the area at the time.

All three of Castellanos’ advisors were briefly detained on February 5th but were later released that same day. Authorities are now working to identify the individuals shown in the video and other potential suspects.

Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the attack may have been carried out by the ELN, a guerrilla group, and has offered a reward of up to $200 million Colombian pesos – approximately $50,000 USD – for information leading to the identification and capture of those responsible. The case highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Colombian politicians, particularly in volatile regions.

Minister Sánchez said that, at the direction of President Gustavo Petro, a coordinated effort involving the Police, the Military, and the Prosecutor’s Office has been launched to investigate the attack.
