Singapore authorities have sentenced an Australian man to nine days in jail following a disruption at a promotional event for Ariana Grande‘s upcoming film, Wicked: Part Two. The November 13th incident, which saw the man rush the red carpet and make physical contact with Grande, has raised concerns about security protocols at high-profile events amid increased global marketing tours. The case also highlights a pattern of disruptive behavior by the individual, known online as “Pyjama Man,” at similar events internationally.
SINGAPORE – An Australian man received a nine-day jail sentence on November 14th for disrupting a promotional event for Ariana Grande’s new film, Wicked: Part Two, in Singapore on November 13th. The incident underscores the challenges of security at high-profile events as entertainment companies ramp up global marketing efforts.
Grande was walking the red carpet and greeting fans when 26-year-old Johnson Wen, who calls himself “Pyjama Man,” rushed towards her and grabbed her around the shoulders. Grande’s co-star, Cynthia Erivo, intervened to protect her, according to reports.
Wen, an Australian national, was subsequently arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. He pleaded guilty, but the judge deemed his actions concerning and premeditated. “You are seeking attention. You are only thinking of yourself and not the safety of others,” Judge Christopher Goh stated, The Straits Times reported.
The judge sentenced Wen to nine days in jail, hoping the punishment would deter future disruptive behavior. This is not Wen’s first public disruption; he has previously stormed stages during concerts by The Chainsmokers, The Weeknd, and Katy Perry, and has also interfered with sporting events.
Wen reportedly apologized in court and promised to refrain from similar actions in the future. Social media users have expressed concern over Wen’s behavior, suggesting he may require mental health support, citing the potential danger of his actions.
