Valve is processing refunds for Ashes of Creation, even for players who don’t meet the standard requirements, following the troubled MMO’s removal from Steam. The move comes after reports surfaced that the entire development team was laid off without notice or final paychecks, sparking widespread concern among players.
The situation is unusual because Steam’s refund policy typically requires a game to be unplayed for less than two hours and purchased within the last 14 days. However, users on Reddit have confirmed that refunds are being approved even when these conditions aren’t met.
While neither Steam nor Valve have issued an official statement, many users believe the decision is a response to the difficult circumstances surrounding the game’s cancellation and the financial hardship faced by developers. This demonstrates a willingness to prioritize its community in the face of a developer crisis.
Ashes of Creation launched on Steam in Early Access on February 5, 2026, as a $50 title, but was quickly pulled from sale after key leadership resigned. The game, described as an MMORPG where player actions shape the game world, was intended to offer a modern take on the classic MMO experience. The rapid unraveling of the project highlights the risks inherent in Early Access game development and the importance of financial stability for studios.
According to reports, Intrepid Studios’ former director of communications, Margaret Krohn, revealed that all staff were laid off after being initially told around 100 developers would lose their jobs. The company reportedly issued WARN Act notices, indicating that 210 employees were affected, with 123 based in California.
“none of us are receiving our final paychecks, the 60-day notice and pay outlined under the WARN Act, PTO payouts, or other compensation owed,” Krohn explained.
