The space agency reports an unusual amount of asteroid activity this week, with several near-Earth objects passing by. Among them is the large asteroid Orpheus, measuring approximately 430 meters in diameter – roughly the size of the Empire State Building.
Orpheus is classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA), not due to an immediate threat, but because of its size and relatively close orbit to Earth. This designation highlights the importance of ongoing celestial monitoring programs.
The asteroid will pass at a speed of 20,000 miles per hour, at a safe distance from Earth, but scientists are continuing to observe it for any potential changes to its trajectory caused by gravitational forces. Precise tracking of these objects is crucial for long-term planetary defense.
