A prominent astrophysicist, Carl Grillmair, 67, was fatally shot on the front of his Los Angeles home, United States, authorities have confirmed. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s report indicated the researcher died from a single gunshot wound to the torso.

Freddy Snyder, 29, has been arrested in connection with the murder and as well faces charges related to auto theft and first-degree burglary, offenses dating back to December 28. Investigators have not yet confirmed any prior connection between the suspect and the victim.

A spokesperson for the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) stated that Grillmair was a research scientist at the institution’s Infrared Processing and Analysis Center.

Grillmair was widely respected for his decades of work in galactic astronomy. His research focused on dark matter, the structure of the Milky Way, stellar populations and the exploration of exoplanets, according to Caltech. His work contributed to a deeper understanding of the universe and the potential for life beyond Earth.

Among his notable contributions is a 2007 scientific paper analyzing the presence of water on a planet outside our solar system.

Colleagues and friends have expressed their grief following the news. Scientist Fajardo-Acosta described Grillmair as a close mentor and a key figure in the development of researchers.

“He was a great friend and we will miss him very much,” Fajardo-Acosta said, adding that Grillmair “takes with him knowledge that will be irreplaceable.”
