Atlético Mineiro is narrowing its options for a new head coach following the departure of Jorge Sampaoli.

The club has a “final list” of four candidates, three of whom are Portuguese and one Argentinian, signaling a preference for a foreign manager, according to reports.

The club’s board aims to finalize a deal as quickly as possible to prepare for the remainder of the season, though finding an agreement may prove challenging given the current market.

Portuguese coach Artur Jorge, who was previously approached in December 2024 after Gabriel Milito’s exit, remains a target, but his high transfer cost from Al-Rayyan of Saudi Arabia presents a significant obstacle.

Racing’s Gustavo Costas, the current manager, has been offered to Atlético. The 62-year-old led Academia to victory in the Copa Sul-Americana“>Copa Sul-Americana, defeating Cruzeiro in 2024, and also secured the Recopa Sul-Americana“>Recopa Sul-Americana against Botafogo in 2025.

Currently in his third stint with the Argentinian club, Costas has managed 181 games for Racing, achieving a 53.9% win rate.

Atlético’s Next Match

The first leg of the Campeonato Mineiro“>Campeonato Mineiro semifinal will be played at Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte.
