audi is reshuffling its high-performance lineup, a move that follows the discontinuation of the RS 5 and RS 4 Avant models at the end of 2024. The decision leaves a void in AudiS portfolio, particularly in its competition with rivals like BMW and Mercedes-AMG . Though, the brand is already signaling a return to the segment with plans to revive the RS 5, albeit with a notable shift in model designation and powertrain.
Audi concluded production of its RS 5 series – encompassing both the Coupé and Sportback models – at the end of 2024, simultaneously discontinuing the legendary RS 4 Avant. While sales figures don’t indicate a massive blow, the move carries significant prestige implications, as Audi currently lacks a direct competitor to the BMW M3/M4 duo and the Mercedes-AMG C 63. This leaves a gap in Audi’s high-performance lineup.

However, a change is on the horizon. Audi announced plans to revive the RS 5, according to a LinkedIn post spotted by Motor1.com. The revival comes with a twist, however, as a shift in naming conventions means this won’t be a coupé; it will effectively serve as a successor to the RS 4.
Details released so far indicate the model will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, though the number of cylinders remains undisclosed. Given Mercedes-Benz’s recent foray into four-cylinder plug-in hybrid AMG models, Audi is unlikely to repeat that approach – a safe bet would be the VW Group’s widely used 3.0-liter V6 engine. Audi is expected to surpass the previous generation’s 450 horsepower and challenge competitors like the BMW M3/M4 (530 hp) and the Mercedes-AMG C 63 (680 hp).

The RS 5 isn’t the only new offering expected from Audi Sport this year, as rumors swirl around a “GT” version of the five-cylinder RS 3. This variant is anticipated to be the most aggressive iteration of the compact performance car to date.
