Despite a significant price increase implemented in August, sales of Austria’s national climate ticket remain strong, with ownership actually rising over the past year. Approximately 300,000 climate tickets are currently in circulation nationwide.
Currently, 300,000 people hold a nationwide climate ticket, including 66,000 in Lower Austria. This represents an increase of nearly 10,000 tickets compared to the same period last year, even after the annual public transportation pass saw a price hike of roughly $135 USD (120 euros) on August 1.
Prior to August 1, the nationwide climate ticket for adults cost $1,265 USD (1,179.30 euros) annually. The price has since risen to $1,400 USD (1,300 euros) per year, and is scheduled to increase again on January 1, 2026, to $1,515 USD (1,400 euros) annually.
While the number of climate ticket holders continues to grow, the rate of increase has slowed. Between 2021 and 2023, ownership nearly tripled, rising from 74,000 to 259,000. Since then, the number of tickets sold has increased by approximately 15 percent, reaching 300,000.

The impact of the higher ticket prices on regional climate ticket sales is not yet known. According to the Eastern Region Transport Association (VOR), sales figures for regional tickets are only evaluated semi-annually, with the next assessment scheduled for January of next year.
