Negotiations between Austria’s hotel and hospitality employers and the vida union remain stalled amid accusations and counter-accusations, potentially delaying a new collective bargaining agreement until March. The dispute centers on alleged labor violations within the industry, with the union claiming widespread issues like cash fraud and off-the-books payments.
The employers’ side initially paused talks, citing what they described as “aggressive” rhetoric from union representatives. On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Olivia Janisch, deputy chairwoman of vida, renewed the union’s criticism of industry practices, refusing to issue an apology as demanded by employer groups. Janisch asserted that addressing problems like unregistered cash transactions and unreported income is crucial for protecting the social safety net.
Wirtschaftskammer counters with “Faktencheck”
In response, the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (Wirtschaftskammer, or WKÖ) released a “fact check” disputing the union’s claims. Employer representatives accused vida of “overgeneralizing” isolated incidents to create a distorted picture of the industry. They maintain that existing legal frameworks and oversight from financial authorities and labor inspectors already provide sufficient protection.
The WKÖ also challenged the union’s criticism of wage growth, citing data from Statistics Austria that shows minimum wages in the hospitality sector have increased by 27.1 percent over the past four years – a higher rate than any other industry in the country. This data underscores the economic realities within the sector, according to employer groups.
Alois Rainer and Georg Imlauer, chairmen of the WKÖ’s hospitality and hotel associations, stated their willingness to resume negotiations, but only “if an end is put to blanket accusations against the industry.” Until that happens, they indicated, talks will remain on hold. A potential starting date for the next round of bargaining is reportedly being targeted for March, though no firm date has been set.
